Book Beginnings: Fahrenheit 451

Every Friday Rose City Reader hosts Book Beginnings on Fridays. What you do is share the opening line(s) of the book you are currently reading and briefly discuss what you think about the opening line or the book or whatever else inspires you. Make sure to share your entry with Rose City Reader and in my comments below.

Here's my book beginning:

"It was a pleasure to burn."

 -Fahrenheit 451, by Ray Bradbury

I'm am still reading A Game of Thrones, but I'll finish it this weekend. Instead of using the same book I used last week, I decided to use the book I will probably read next. I've only read one short story by Bradbury, and I figured it was about time I started reading more of his work.

  2. I have heard so much about this book in so many contexts that I feel like I have read it. And, you know, I might have read it years ago. Do you ever feel that way about books? Not knowing if you have read them or not. Happy reading!

    1. Yes, I definitely have felt that way about books. Movies too. Sometimes as I'm reading or watching them I have a strong feeling of deja vu. Thanks for visiting!

  5. A famous/classic/awesome opener. And it comes from one of the few required reads in high school that I actually enjoyed...the 1966 movie was an interesting interpretation.

I hope you like it (I'm confident you will)

    Thanks for visiting my blog!

  7. Sounds awesome. On a side note I love Game of Thrones! But I do think the first series was a better adaptation than the second, and my family banned me from discussing it with them... None of them have read the books :S

    1. Lucky me my dad has read up until the current book, so I can talk with him...though he accidentally let slip a spoiler already. There's so much to the book I think it's easy to do that, though. Thanks for visiting!

  9. I featured this one last week. It really is worth reading. There's so much of his stuff that is. One of the books I have on the go just now is a collection of his short stories called 'The October Country'. Someone gave me 'A Game of Thrones' last year, but I just haven't managed to get to it yet.

  11. A good pick, seeing how Mr. Bradbury passed away. My favorite story of his was The Long Rain.

    1. Thank you for the recommendation! I noticed you have a post of it on your blog, and the synopsis reminds me of an Isaac Asimov story I read long ago, though I don't remember the name. Thanks for visiting!

  12. I read Fahrenheit 451 for the first time a few years ago and just last night we were discussing it at dinner. I didn't realize there was a movie of it so I am going to add it to my netflix

  13. Hi Chris,

I have never read any Bradbury before and I have to come clean and admit that I actually know little or nothing about him, or his books, although naturally I had heard about his sad death.

Your great opening lines had me intrigued, as I had no idea what they could possibly mean, so I checked out the full synopsis.

The concept of being forced to burn books, had me sweating and feeling a little sick. I can't imagine a world without books. I guess that blogging is really living in a virtual world, but existing in this false way as a regular and permanent state, is just so frightening!

This is definitely one for my reading list and if I get on okay with it, I shall be reading more of his work.

    Thanks for sharing,

    Yvonne

  14. This is such a brilliant opening line! As a reader you are immediately questioning everything! I still haven't found the time to read 'Game of Thrones' even though a friend keeps on throwing the book at my head every time he sees me in the hope of getting me to read it.
