Every Friday Rose City Reader hosts Book Beginnings on Fridays. What you do is share the opening line(s) of the book you are currently reading and briefly discuss what you think about the opening line or the book or whatever else inspires you. Make sure to share your entry with Rose City Reader and in my comments below.
Here's my book beginning:
"I clasp the flask between my hands even though the warmth from the tea has long since leached into the frozen air. My muscles are clenched tight against the cold. If a pack of wild dogs were to appear at this moment, the odds of scaling a tree before they attacked are not in my favor."
-Catching Fire, by Suzanne Collins
Having finally finished A Clash of Kings last night, I'm now going to continue The Hunger Games series. This opening makes it sound like Katniss is in a dangerous position, except the drinking tea part. Now to see what happens next.
She is very cold! I haven't gotten to these yet, and I'm not sure that I will, thought I've got the audiobooks stored on my iPod. That's a promising beginning, though.
ReplyDeleteI haven't even started this series...hope you're enjoying it; and thanks for visiting my blog.
ReplyDeleteHow British is that, to drink tea in crisis time? Ok, now I am just imagining the Hunger Games taking place in London XD Thanks for stopping by and I hope you enjoy 'Catching Fire'!

Hi Juli,
DeleteI know that we Brits are notorious for bringing out the tea at the drop of a hat, however I can guarantee you darned well, that if I was being chased by a pack of wild dogs, the last thing on my mind would be whether or not my tea was going cold!!! LOL
I certainly wouldn't be too cold to climb the flipping tree either!!
Yvonne
I haven't started The Hunger Games. I love your comments when you visit. Have a great week-end.
ReplyDeleteSounds like she better hope those wild dogs don't appear....
ReplyDeleteHere are my Friday Memes.
This book was okay. You'll breeze through it like I'm sure you did the first one.
ReplyDeleteI'm going straight to the movies on this series. Usually I like to read the books first, but I don't honestly think I'd ever read them. So it's the movies for me.
ReplyDeleteThanks for taking part in Book Beginnings on Friday!
I love the series. Honestly you just can't stop at the first ... I hope you're enjoying this one Chris. I don't think you'll be TOO disappointed :)
ReplyDeleteHere's mine. Plus I have a giveaway of my featured book starting tomorrow: http://guiltlessreading.blogspot.ca/2012/07/friday-56-book-beginnings-lovely.html
I just read this a couple of weeks ago. In fact I read this and Mockingjay in four days. I just had to finish off the series! It was hard to put them down. A great series! My Friday post:

I'd love to read these books, but I have yet to buy them, I keep debating over it and something else always wins over, I suppose there's always the option to borrow them from someone though...
ReplyDeleteDo the wild dogs appear? Interesting beginning. Thanks for stopping by!
ReplyDeleteHi Chris,
ReplyDeleteGiven the seriousness of the situation, the flask of tea seems a little superfluous really.
'Juli' comments that tea drinking is a typically English thing ... well I am English and I am darned sure that if I was being chased by a pack of wild dogs, the last thing on my mind would be whether or not my tea was going cold!!
This isn't really my kind of series, however I just had to check out the synopses for the books. The books had received some good press from authors such as Stephen King, although I am not surprised, as the synopsis for 'The Hunger Games' reminds me very much of Stephens own book 'The Running Man', which he published under his pseudonym of Richard Bachman.
Even more to the fore of my memory, is the film of the same name 'The Running Man' made way back in 1987 and starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, the resemblance in storyline just hit me straight away.
Enjoy the book,
Yvonne
Katniss is not actually in a situation of peril at this moment. She is out hunting, or, rather, waiting for game, and she's just putting out the hypothetical situation of wild dogs attacking her and that her muscles would not be prepared to react if that did happen.
DeleteIt is confusing, though, the way it's written.
First of all, thank you so much for your lovely comments on my blog! This opening sounds like a cliffhanger before the story starts! Quite a breathless moment! Enjoy!
ReplyDeleteThis character sounds worn out from the start! Very descriptive beginning.
ReplyDeleteI may have to break down and read these books, after all ;)
ReplyDeleteThe beginning of a book is super important!
ReplyDeleteI really liked The Hunger Games series!!
I hope you enjoy reading them and finishing the story!
