WWW Wednesdays

WWW Wednesdays is a meme hosted by MizB at Should Be Reading. What you do is answer the following three questions:

 What are you currently reading?

I've taken a brief break from George R. R. Martin's A Storm of Swords to read Hamidah Gul's self-published short story collection called Anthology 1: The Other Side. It's not my policy to accept self-published books, but I accepted Gul's without looking into her book. While some of the ideas are good, the execution is lacking, and it's very clear that English is Gul's second language as the writing suffers from tense problems and wrong word usage, sometimes in unintentionally funny ways. Oh well, at least it's short.

What did you recently finish reading?

I most recently finished Christopher Lee's short story, The Archaeologists, the first part of a series of stories. While I enjoyed the style, I found the content a little too graphic, both the sex and the language. It's free on the Kindle if you want to give it a shot, but reader beware. My review is here.

What do you think you'll read next?

I'm going to finish Martin's A Storm of Swords. I'm 500 pages in, and I can definitely see why people are saying it's his best so far. You get a much better sense of Martin's world as a whole, and the storylines develop in much more interesting ways than they did in A Clash of Kings.

  1. Good luck with the Anthology! I have a hard time forcing myself to read anything these days. My WWW for this week is here:

  3. Sorry that Anthology wasn't all that great I've been branching out a little more into the world of self-published but still a bit wary of it. However, Song of the Red Cloak by Chantel Acevedo and Angelfall by Susan Ee (soon to be published by Amazon's new(ish) publishing company) were really good - well written and executed. I highly recommend.

In response to the comment you left on my WWW Wednesday about Raven Boys. I only just started it. My issue was I had no desire to open a book let alone read it. I carried Raven Boys around with me but I forced myself over the weekend to open and try several books and Pushing the Limits held my attention until I finished it and that in turn made it easier to pick up some other reads. Now I just need work to not be busy so I can not be so mentally exhausted when I get home so I can read more. =)

    1. Thanks for the recommendations, Irish! I have no doubt there are great self-published books out there, but without the professional review there's less quality control. And I understand about mental exhaustion. It's amazing what a good book can do to get you through that.

    2. Found myself back here again well working through the WWW posts that came in after mine. Just thought I'd leave another quick comment and say both the self-pub books I read were edited by independent editing professionals. Its part of why I took the plunge and read them. =) I have so much epic love for this book. I read whizzed through it on my train ride from Boston to NYC this past June. If you liked the movie 300...you'll probably like this as its set in Sparta too. =)

  4. Too bad the anthology is not as well written as it could have been. Lookig forward to your review of it.

  6. Thoughtful review of The Archeologists. You've saved me the trouble of reading it and being turned off by the language.

  7. I haven't even started Game of Thrones. =( I've heard good things about it, but I have so many other books to read too!

Thanks for stopping by my WWW Wednesday =)

  8. Sounds like Anthology could have used a heavy red (experienced) editor's pen. Sorry to hear it's not suffering for it. Although unexpected funny moments can't be too bad, right? Unless you're laughing AT the author, rather than with him...

I need to dig into A Storm of Swords because I've heard that's the best of them all, too. I'm very excited to do so - *scrounges to my TBR piles to fit it in*

Thanks for stopping by my WoW/WWW!
